null The Best Student Recognition Event is a European event organized annually by IBM, each year in one of IBM's european labs. Last year in Zurich, this year in Krakow, we don't know where the BSRE 2010 will take place !
Each year the BSRE gathers around 100 students from everywhere in Europe (including E.U countries but also Russia, Israël, Turkey, ...) and proposes many conferences about new technologies presented by IBMers .

As you may know, Global Tech is a programme specialized in the management of new technologies. Several IBMers lectured at our school -Grenoble Ecole de Management- to present us the company and the innovations planned for the next decade. Three places were finally proposed to our class, Paul, Piotr and I were invited to the Best Student Recognition Event 2009 where we represented IBM France.

This blog will recap the BSRE 2009, where we spent 3 full days of learning and having fun !

Paul, Piotr and I (Caroline) are three students from Grenoble Ecole de Management, a great French Business School situated in the heart of the Alpes ! The three of us were in the Global Tech programme in 2008/09 : an English program specialized in high-tech entrepreneurship, innovation, management and business strategy.

Piotr WALAS
Piotr was a student from Poland in academic exchange in Grenoble Ecole de Management. He learnt French incredibly quickly. He's going to be triple graduated ! And he naturally was our guide in Krakow !

Paul MARCON
Paul is still a student at Grenoble Ecole de Management, he decided to spend his 3rd year in the information system programme (via EMSI "Ecole de Management des Systèmes d'Informations from the Grenoble Ecole de Management group).

Caroline DELMAS

I'm now currently taking a professional off in Paris where I work for Microsoft as a Marketing Assistant in the small and medium size partners and customers segment. After my internship, I will return to Grenoble for my last year at school.

C
ity wrapped in legend, where time flows differently, and where every moment becomes a moment of history. For centuries Krakow was the capital of Poland, the seat of kings, drawing great scholars and artists from the whole world. It is their talents and imagination we must thank for the city's rich legacy of unique historical relics, which reflect the most important trends in European culture.

The renaissance Royal Castle at Wawel, the gothic St Mary's Basilica, the historical trade pavilions of the Cloth Hall, the former separate Jewish city of Kazimierz, and even the Nowa Huta district, absorbed by Krakow together with its socialist-realist, industrial architecture, are all places which make a visit to Krakow extremely worthwhile.

Although the city no longer plays such an important administrative role, for many people, thanks to its rich history, Krakow nevertheless represents a synthesis of all things Polish, connecting tradition with modernity. In the special atmosphere of the beautiful and mysterious streets of the Old Town and Kazimierz you will find everything you need to allow you to escape from everyday life. Galleries full of exhibitions, cafes, pubs and restaurants: all of this is an integral part of any visit to Krakow. And all this is merely a modest part of what we can offer travellers seeking exciting destinations on the world map.

Presentations

The BEST Student Recognition Event lasted 3 days. The agenda was mainly dedicated to presentations by various people related to IBM: Human Resource managers, consultants, software engineers and researchers.

The first day, we had presentations about Poland and Krakow as a welcome then we were told about the IBM Smarter Planet initiative with a focus on the Traffic management system in Stockhlom designed and implemented by IBM.

The next day, there was a presentation about job and internship opportunities at IBM.

We went to the IBM software development in Krakow where we could see some software working. IBM engineers were excited to answer to questions by students.

During the afternoon, we had presentations about supercomputers, their architecture and their applications, beginning in fundamental science then used to improve mainframe computers.

Innovation strategy at IBM was then presented. We saw how this corporation gather information from different sources, scientists, managers and citizens.

Eventually, two students freshly hired by IBM explained their integration in the Krakow's lab.

On the final day, we had a quiz about the presentations of the two previous days. The best team won a Nintendo Wii, that has a processor developped by IBM, for each member of the team.

Non academic activities

During the evenings, we enjoyed the beautiful city of Krakow with great medieval neighborhoods. We went to a salt mine in Wieliczka where, after a guided tour, we had a dinner at several hundreds of meters deep ! More about Wieliczka salt mine
here.

The atmosphere of the event was very pleasant, the people working for IBM were friendly and we had good relationships with the other international students present there.

The first thing I noticed was the great framework of IBMers in Krakow ! We visited their labs just in front of our hotel: 2 big towers with brand new equipment inside. The atmosphere seemed convivial. The engineers welcomed us to show us their work and explain what it is all about.

But what do they work on ?

One particular project caught my attention was because of:
It's a substantial project that could change our world (it’s quite something!)
As a business student with no engineering background, this subject was the most understandable and fascinating !

You must be thinking, “what is it ??”

A Smarter Planet

“ The world is becoming instrumented, interconnected and intelligent”

This is the starting point of a new way of thinking at IBM. With a trillion networked things—cars,
roadways, pipelines, appliances, pharmaceuticals and even livestock—the amount of information created by those interactions grows exponentially.
However a lot of failures occur every day in our lives: mail delivery is low, traffic jams are a daily issue in most of the big cities in the world, sick students miss a part of their lessons because they have to stay at home, … In sum, many of our current ways of doing things are inefficient and expensive, and eventually will not work.

IBMers consider that their role is to work together to make our planet smarter simply by using our existing resources and our expertise and experience.
The new objective at IBM is to work on concrete solutions that could enable people to avoid wasting time and money.

I suggest you to read more about this wide project on the following websites:
